Festetics-castle, dég

Dég Festetics Mansion is the earliest neoclassical residence in Hungary. Antal Festetics was the commissioner of construction of both the mansion and the park. Construction began in 1802, and the Festetics family, who were interested in botany, created the largest English park in Hungary. Given that both were created by Mihály Pollack, it is no coincidence that the main building, with its two porticoes, is reminiscent of the National Museum in Budapest.

SITE DESCRIPTION

The mansion is surrounded by the largest English landscape garden in Hungary, which is comparable in size to Central Park in New York and has rare plants and ancient trees. A long white bridge connects to the red-brick Hollandi (Dutch) House, which was constructed in 1891 in the breathtaking German Lowland style, on the park’s lake island.

Corporate events, wedding ceremonies, and other family gatherings can be hosted in the mansion’s spectacular ceremonial hall. The terraced café is a suitable location for parties, receptions, and even modest gala dinners. During a photo or film shoot, unique images can be taken in both the mansion and the park.

The mansion, surrounding park, and the fact that it is a mere one-hour drive from Budapest, make the location ideal for indoor or outdoor private parties and corporate events.

Exhibition

Themed exhibition spaces have been set up in the mansion, where visitors, through interactive elements and on-site learning sessions, can learn about the history of Freemasonry and its Hungarian aspects, the flora of the park, the life of the Festetics family, the construction history of the mansion and the work of its architect, Mihály Pollack. The family had a keen interest in botany, and it was their passion that led to the development of the English landscape park, which is unique in Europe due to its large number of ancient trees and other plant species. An authentic Kossuth herb storage cabinet displayed as part of the exhibition comprises some of the most fascinating herbarium sheets from Hungarian botanical collections from the first half of the 19th century, including plants collected in Dég.

In the ground-floor exhibition area, the diverse history of the Festetics family, as well as their historical role, hobbies, leisure and sporting activities are brought to life. Numerous original objects have been returned to the cabinets in the library.

An exhibition of Freemasonry has been arranged on the first floor, where visitors can take part in an initiation ceremony of the secret society, with the help and use of various interactive tools.
